You can deny IP addresses from accessing your website when you believe they belong to people trying to do bad things to your website.

inside your htaccess file paste the following into the file and place on your web server.

order allow,deny
deny from 123.45.6.7
deny from 012.34.5.
allow from all

The deny from is the IP address that you want to block. You can search Google for some methods to block an entire country if you wish or at least a good portion of the country to reduce your chances of being attacked.

There is a file on your server or at least it should be on your server. This file is called an .htaccess file and it provides a lot of instructions to your web hosting server.

What can it do:

  1. Password Protect - The file can password protect website directories on your server. So for example you don’t want someone getting easy access to your administrative functions, then you can use an htaccess file in the directory requiring a password just to get in.
  2. Block IP – You can block a set of IP addresses from accessing your website. An example, you have a blog and get a constant message saying someone posted a comment for your approval, then 50 more of those same messages come in saying the same thing. You are getting some serious blog spam and need to block that IP Address that has been submitting those messages. Go a step further and just block all of that country if you want. If there are certain countries that you don’t do business with get the range of IP Addresses needed and just block them completely.

WordPress is a content management system and blogging script. Many use it as a blogging platform, but it has evolved to a much larger system over the years. You’ve probably visited some websites out there that you didn’t even know were made from WordPress just because of their layout.

It used to be that most WordPress websites you visit looked exactly like a blog, now they can look like many other complex websites you may see out there.

Social networking is a really great place to get your website business out there. It’s free advertising just by getting people to become fans on Facebook or join your circle on Google plus or any network they may be in such as LinkedIn.

It’s free advertising because when you post an update they will all see it and may jump at the opportunity that you present to them.

I’ve come across customers who for some reason purchase their domain name and hosting before they even get a website designed for themselves. Before I even talk about buying a domain name, if you plan on having a website custom designed talk to a web design first they can save you money and help you get the best possible name for your business.

Now about buying a domain name.

  1. Match your Business Name -You want your domain name to match your business name if possible. Most of those awesome names are gone, match.com, webdesign.com, etc, etc. If they aren’t being used then the cyber squatters have snatched them up and are waiting for you to come along and give them $10,000 or more for their $10 domain name.
  2. All Else Fails - Well if you aren’t able to get a domain with your business name then pick something with a relevant name to your business. If you have a company that sales widgets, then make sure widgets is in the domain name.
  3. Easy to Remember - Your domain name has to be easy for your customers to remember. Make sure you DO NOT have hyphens in your domain name, do you really expect your customers to remember to place a hyphen in your domain name. It isn’t going to happen which means your website traffic will be limited to the occasional customer that finds your website through the search engines. No hyphens and keep your domain name limited to one or two syllables if at all possible.
  4. .Com – a dot com domain name is still the most popular website domain. If you are a non-profit or some type of organization then get a .org domain name. My main point is stay with whats popular at the moment, you are completely welcome to by the other domain types when you get your dot com at checkout so you have the option later to use the other domain type if you want.

Bottom line folks, if you are wanting to start a website get with a website designer for assistance with your domain name. They should help you with your selection with no issues.

Shared hosting is just hosting where there are multiple websites on one server and there are some restrictions in place that prevent you from making certain changes to the hosting account that may affect other members on the plan.

I have found 1and1.com so far to offer the best shared hosting. It is fast and reliable and so far I haven’t had any issues with their service…..so far.

There are several shared hosting companies out there. Below is a list of them you can search them on Google for the website address, I’m just providing you with a list and my opinion of some of them.

1and1.com – My #1 recommended hosting company and if you plan on using my website design services make sure to get the Linux plan because I only like working with PHP unless I hire a .Net designer, but not right now.

I’m not a web hosting review service, if you don’t like 1and1.com then check out the reviews at WebHostingSearch.com

iPage – Affordable and seems liked by many.

justhost.com – affordable seems liked by many.

FatCow – affordable ok ratings, not great.
